Fashion: Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy

Eleven years ago today, one of America’s favorite sons, John F. Kennedy Jr., his beautiful wife Carolyn and her dear sister Lauren died in a plane crash near Martha’s Vineyard.  I thought today it might be nice to look back at happier times of a woman with a style I so admired.

Through the mid-nineties, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy quickly became one of my fashion icons.  Her style evolved over those years into a simple, refined elegance.  And no matter what the occasion, she stayed true to this chic simplicity… even on her wedding day.  I loved that about her.

Here’s a look back at this lovely woman.  Hope you enjoy.  Who are your fashion icons?

Photo sources:  Because of my admiration of her style, I’ve been collecting photos of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy for years in a computer file.  (Long before I began blogging.)  Because of this, I unfortunately don’t have my photo sources documented.  If one of these photos belongs to you, please let me know so that I may give full credit.  Thank you.

Has it been 11 years already? That’s a bit scary. I remember reading about the crash. She did have great style. I mean, she had a Birkin……

Great post! I thought she had incredible style too. I will forever be in love with her in that camel skirt…can’t see the boots in that photo, but it was a minimalist, elegant ensemble. I was so sad when I had heard about what happened to her.

♥ V – That ensemble was my favorite too! (That’s why I chose it to appear first in the post.) I know the exact boots you’re talking about…they were a warm medium brown shade and completed the ensemble beautifully.

I agree with you completely. Chic simplicity was something that I will continually think of regarding her. When you said 11 years ago, I had to think and it really doesn’t seem that long ago, but I remember waking up to the news in July and exactly where I was. So sad, so sad.

Thank you so much for the mention in your guest post and a much deserved congratulations. You certainly need to find some time to celebrate my dear. Have a fantastic weekend. =)

Oh, and I can completely relate to one of your reasons for starting to blog – a need to release your creativity b/c your day job at the time didn’t provide the opportunity. We could talk about that I’m sure sometime. =)

    Take care.

♥ Shannon – I too, remember exactly where I was. It was one of three instances that I recall like they just happened. The other two were the death of Princess Di, and then the Oklahoma City bombing. (I was in OKC and actually felt the blast…so that one is even a little more memorable for me.)

You’re welcome for the mention. It’s well-deserved! You write so beautifully. It’s always a pleasure to read your blog. Have a great weekend!

I LOVE her, and have every single one of those pictures. Their dog was named Friday. She was getting her toes done and had brought a little piece of fabric to the manicurist from a dress she was planning to wear so that they could find a polish to match perfectly and that made them late to get on the plane that day. Yes, I’m a bit obsessed, lol! Love her! XO!

I lived in NYC at that time, and I remember seeing each one of the pics you show here; they were such a great and stylish couple; didn’t we all adore that outfit with the long camel skirt, and want our hair buttery yellow? I can’t believe it’s really been 11 years. thanks for the post…
