How to Apply Self-Tanner

Achieve a Gorgeous Faux Glow, Part 2 of 2:

Good morning and welcome to part two of this self-tanning series.  Yesterday, I shared my earliest experiences with self-tanning.  In case you missed it, I think the term horrific best described the situation.  icon wink How to Apply Self Tanner

Luckily I finally found a great product and learned the tips and tricks to make application much easier.

As I discussed yesterday, Bare Escentuals’ Faux Tan is my favorite because it addresses every tanning problem I’ve had over the years:

  • Smells good.
  • Tinted to assist in even application.
  • Doesn’t turn orange.

I especially like the buffing brush occasionally offered with the product.  It’s amazing!

Now here’s the not-so-good news…  Since yesterday’s post, the BE configuration that included the buffing brush (BE Bronzed and Buff) has sold out.  And I doubt we’ll see it again this year.

So instead of doing the post I’d planned which was how to apply BE’s Faux Tan with their buffing brush… I’m off to Plan B: Applying self-tanner by hand.

Sinead Norenius is the founder of Beautisol, a self-tanning line.  I’ve never used Beautisol, so I cannot make any claims about its effectiveness.  But one thing I know for sure, Sinead knows her stuff when it comes to application.

If applying self-tanner by hand, I’ve not found a better teacher than Sinead.  So I’ve attached her video demonstrations.  She thoroughly explains application for each zone of the body in a separate video.  I’ve labeled each, so you can just watch the videos that can best help you.

Elbows, Knees and other Trouble Zones:

Before watching the videos below, here are a few tips I have for the problem areas:  Most problems with self-tanner are on areas with thicker skin: elbows, knuckles, knees, ankles and heels.  To help prevent extra darkening in these areas, moisturize them before applying self-tanner.  And then don’t apply a glob of self-tanner directly to any of these areas.  Instead, rub product into the surrounding areas and then drag just a tiny hint of  product from surrounding areas onto these trouble zones.

Between the moisturizer and then the non-direct application technique, the elbows, knees, etc… receive less self-tanner and don’t become overly dark.

See videos below for more application techniques.
