Jewelry Designer Spotlight

Twisted Silver’s Debra Mitchell:

In jewelry best described as bold, unlikely elements come together to form a vintage retro-contemporary line.  Combining mixed metals, lots of chain details and salvaged finds, founder and designer Debra Mitchell has created a cult ts ring Jewelry Designer Spotlightfollowing with her indie line: Twisted Silver.

Who is Debra Mitchell?

Although she wasn’t always a jewelry designer, Debra developed a love of fashion early on.  While still in high school she modeled for the local department store – Bon Marché.  Then while in college (earning a degree in Fashion) she worked as a Fashion Coordinator for this same store.

For a time, this artist channeled her creativity into making wind chimes from vintage spoons.  When I asked her what drew her to these cast-off, utilitarian objects she responded,

“It isn’t the spoon that draws me in, it is the history of the spoon.  It began when I was pretty young, driven to turn something forgotten or cast off into something current and modern.  Furniture, clothing, jewelry, whatever.  Sometimes it only took dusting off and placement… These are things we see all the time now, but 25 years ago, this wasn’t the thing to do.  But I did it and people loved what I did.  Creating interest in something that is forgotten-that really is what gets my creative juices flowing.”

Even today, many Twisted Silver designs still feature parts of vintage spoons.

Celebrity Following:

Hollywood has taken notice of these unique designs.  If you watched Rock Star: INXS, you saw Brooke Burke wearing a Twisted Silver Leather Rocker Necklace throughout the season.  (Incidentally, this was one of the pieces utilizing a spoon in its design.)  Soon, everyone from Nicollette Sheridan to Finola Hughes and Maria Schriver were spotted wearing the designs.

And Twisted Silver is no stranger to the magazine scene either; featured several times in the pages of Lucky Magazine and many others.

Launching the New Line:

Currently Twisted Silver is launching the appropriately named line, Salvage.  Within this line you will see flattened, fired and antiqued metals.  And designs inspired or salvaged from vintage finds.  These statement-making pieces feature darker tones perfect for the upcoming season.
