Part 2, Prepare to Rest and Relax:
As we discussed in our last Staycation post, there are three necessary components of any getaway:
- Relaxation and rest.
- Connecting with loved ones through shared experiences.
- Disconnecting with everyday life and getting back to the basics.
An actual travel-out-of-town vacation seems to help make some of these things happen relatively easily. While a staycation requires a little more effort–with some preparation, these goals can still be accomplished.
Today we will discuss ways to set the stage for rest and relaxation.
Preparation is Key to a Restful/Relaxing Staycation.
1.) Get ready to relax and rest. You know that nervous energy you get the day before you leave for vacation? The day you get more done than you do most weeks… All because you know you need to have all loose ends tied up before leaving.
Make it happen before your staycation too! Don’t leave chores to do during your break. You want to feel like a guest in your own home! With everything done, you’re almost forced to relax. After all, there’s nothing left to do. This is at the core of why vacations away from home are so relaxing.
2.) Pay special attention to the bedroom during this prep period. Because: 74% of adults say that on average, they don’t get enough sleep at night. -National Sleep Foundation survey
Most people report sleeping better on vacation than they do during day-to-day life. Part of this is because hotels are designed for sleeping. Think about this:
- Hotel rooms are uncluttered and consist of little more than a bed and a cabinet of some sort. No laundry basket of clothes waiting to be folded. No computer desk and bills sitting in the corner…
- The bedding is generally of a high thread count and is luxurious. Hotel beds just seem to swallow you up in comfort.
- Black out shades. When was the last time the rising sun interrupted your sleep while in a hotel? Unless you forgot to close the curtains…probably never. Hotels invest in curtains designed to block out all sunlight. We can sleep longer and better in this situation.
So spend some extra effort on the bedroom to insure a restful staycation. If you don’t have luxurious, 500+ thread count sheets, check out Smartbargains.com. They have rock-bottom prices on these sleep savers…(and they carry featherbeds too–which I love!) Use this link to receive a special discount: 12% off for New Customers.
The best part? Spend about what you’d pay for a single night’s hotel stay…and reap the rewards all year long!
3.) Don’t schedule anything during your staycation. No hair appointments, doctor/dentist visits, no oil changes or car repairs…nothing! Make sure the bills are paid, lawn is mowed, errands are done and there is nothing left to do but relax.
Next time we’ll discuss ways to connect with loved ones through shared experiences. So if you’re planning a staycation this Labor Day…stay tuned!

Oh I could definitely use a staycation right now, too much stress! I’m going to try some of your tips though, especially the black-out shades thing, my shades let in way too much light in the mornings!
