Did You Know?
Independence Day, more commonly referred to as the Fourth of July is obviously celebrated on July 4th. But did you know that this exact date is not quite as simple as most believe?
Here are a few Fourth Facts:
- Legal separation from Great Britain actually occurred on July 2nd with a vote by the Second Continental Congress.
- The Declaration of Independence was an explanation of that decision. After a debate and revision –it was approved on July 4, 1776.
- It is widely believed that Congress signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. However most delegates actually signed later than that, on August 2nd.
- In a strange twist of fate, two of the Declaration’s signers: Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, both later died on July 4, 1826.
- Even more coincidental–a third US President, James Monroe also died on July 4th just 5 years later. (However he was not a signer of the Declaration.)
We at Daily Diva Dish want to wish all of you a safe and happy 4th!
